Dental bridge vs implant for a missing tooth

Compare what supports the replacement tooth, what the treatment involves and how to discuss the complete cost.

Clinically reviewed by Dr. Ghazala Zaid · 2026-09-13

The short answer

A traditional tooth-supported bridge uses neighbouring teeth to support a replacement tooth. An implant-supported crown uses an implant in the jaw. The condition of nearby teeth and the implant assessment help determine which options are reasonable.

Which kind of bridge is being compared?

‘Bridge’ can mean several designs. A traditional bridge differs from a resin-bonded bridge, and bridges can also be supported by implants. This page compares a traditional tooth-supported bridge with a single implant-supported crown; it does not rule out other suitable options.

Ask your dentist to explain which teeth or implants would support the restoration. If the adjacent teeth already need treatment, ask how that changes the plan. If they are intact, ask what preparation would be required.

Compare more than the replacement tooth

For an implant estimate, clarify whether assessment, extraction if needed, grafting if needed, surgery, the connecting component and final crown are included. For a bridge, clarify the number of units, supporting-tooth work and any temporary restoration.

Also discuss how long each path is expected to take and what you would use in the meantime. Ask for a demonstration of the cleaning routine and an explanation of follow-up. Neither fixed option is maintenance-free, and a lower starting price does not describe every future consideration.

Take these questions to your dentist

Use this as a conversation checklist. You do not need to choose a treatment before your assessment.

  • What bridge design are we comparing?
  • How healthy are the potential supporting teeth?
  • What does the implant assessment need to establish?
  • What is included in each complete treatment estimate?

Common questions

Can I remove a fixed bridge at home?

No. A fixed bridge is not a removable denture. Ask the dental team to show you how to clean around and beneath it.

Is an implant suitable for every gap?

No. The mouth, bone and general health need assessment. Ask about the alternatives if implant treatment is unsuitable or not your preference.
