Tooth Extractions in Scarborough

When a tooth can't be saved, a calm, gentle process and clear aftercare instructions.

We try to preserve natural teeth whenever it's realistic, but sometimes a tooth is too damaged, infected, or crowded to save. At Cedarbrae Dental Center, we handle extractions gently and walk you through recovery and replacement options right from the start.

Open 7 days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

When saving a tooth isn't realistic

We always look for a way to keep a natural tooth first, whether through a filling, a root canal, or a crown. An extraction becomes the recommended option when the damage is too extensive for those treatments to work reliably, such as a tooth that's fractured below the gumline, severely decayed, or so loose from advanced gum disease that it can't be stabilized.

Extractions are also sometimes needed to relieve crowding before orthodontic treatment, or for wisdom teeth that are causing problems. Whatever the reason, we'll explain clearly why we believe extraction is the right call before moving forward, since it's not a decision we take lightly.

A gentle process, with aftercare that matters

  1. Numbing and comfort

We numb the area thoroughly with local anaesthetic before starting, and check in with you throughout so the appointment stays comfortable.

  2. The extraction

For most teeth, this is a straightforward, quick procedure. More complex extractions, such as wisdom teeth, may take a bit longer and involve additional steps.

  3. Socket preservation, if needed

If you're planning to replace the tooth later with an implant, we may recommend a small graft in the socket at the time of extraction to help preserve the bone for future treatment.

  4. Aftercare instructions

We send you home with clear instructions on managing swelling, protecting the healing socket, and what to eat over the first few days.

  5. Follow-up

We check in on healing and talk through replacement options, such as an implant, bridge, or denture, once the site has settled.

Common reasons for an extraction

Extraction is typically recommended for teeth that are:

  • Fractured below the gumline or too damaged to restore
  • Severely decayed beyond what a filling or crown can repair
  • Loosened significantly by advanced gum disease
  • Causing crowding that needs to be relieved before orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
  • A source of infection that isn't responding to other treatment

Insurance, CDCP, and extractions

Most dental insurance plans cover a meaningful portion of a standard extraction, and surgical or more complex extractions are often covered at a different rate. We can check your specific plan before treatment so you have a clear expectation.

If you're eligible under the Canadian Dental Care Plan, extractions are commonly part of what's covered, subject to your individual eligibility. We'll help you understand your situation and always give you a written estimate rather than a guess.
