Dental Veneers in Scarborough

Thin, custom shells that reshape the front of your smile — planned carefully, with honest advice about what they involve.

Veneers are slim covers, usually porcelain, bonded to the front of your teeth to change their shape, colour, and alignment. At Cedarbrae Dental Center on Lawrence Ave East, we plan veneers around your natural features and are upfront about the trade-offs, including the fact that preparing a tooth for a veneer is irreversible.

Open 7 days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

What veneers are and what they change

A veneer is a thin shell, most often made of porcelain, that we bond over the front surface of a tooth. Think of it as a custom facing that changes how the tooth looks without rebuilding the whole thing. Veneers can brighten teeth that will not respond to whitening, close small gaps, reshape teeth that are chipped or worn, and make slightly crooked teeth look more even. Because they cover the visible surface, they mainly transform the teeth that show when you smile.

Porcelain is popular for veneers because it handles light much like natural enamel, so a well-made veneer looks like a real tooth rather than a flat white cap. Each veneer is custom-made to a shape and shade planned with you, which is why the planning stage matters as much as the bonding.

Veneers are a cosmetic choice, not a health necessity, and they are not the only way to improve a smile. For minor chips or a single tooth, dental bonding may achieve a similar look with less commitment, and whitening alone may be enough if colour is your only concern. Part of our job is helping you pick the right tool, not the most expensive one.

Is a veneer right for you?

Veneers suit some concerns better than others, and healthy teeth underneath matter. We assess these points before recommending them.

  • You want to improve the colour, shape, or minor alignment of teeth that show when you smile.
  • Your teeth and gums are healthy — decay and gum issues are treated first.
  • You have enough healthy enamel to bond a veneer to.
  • You understand that preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer is irreversible.
  • If you grind your teeth, you are willing to wear a night guard to protect the veneers.

The honest trade-offs

Benefits

  • Can dramatically improve the look of front teeth in a way whitening cannot.
  • Porcelain resists staining better than natural enamel, so results stay bright.
  • Custom-shaped and shaded to look natural with your other teeth.
  • With good care, quality veneers can last many years.

Honest limits

  • Preparing a tooth for a porcelain veneer removes a thin layer of enamel and cannot be undone — the tooth will always need a veneer or crown afterward.
  • Veneers can chip or come loose, especially if you bite hard objects or grind your teeth.
  • They do not change the colour once made, so we plan the shade carefully up front.
  • Veneers are cosmetic and are generally not covered by insurance or CDCP.

How veneers are planned and placed

  1. Smile consultation

We talk about what you would like to change, examine your teeth, and discuss whether veneers, bonding, or whitening best fit your goals. Healthy teeth and gums come first, so we treat any decay or gum issues before cosmetic work.

  2. Design and trial smile

We plan the shape and shade together, often using a preview or trial smile so you can see the proposed look before anything is permanent. This is your chance to fine-tune the result.

  3. Preparing the teeth

For porcelain veneers, we gently remove a thin layer of enamel so the veneer sits flush and looks natural. This step is irreversible, which is why we plan so carefully first. We take an impression or scan and often place temporaries.

  4. Bonding the veneers

Once your custom veneers are made, we check the fit, shape, and colour with you, then bond them securely to your teeth. We adjust the bite so everything feels comfortable.

  5. Care and protection

We review how to look after your veneers and, if you grind your teeth, fit a night guard to protect them. Regular checkups let us keep an eye on the veneers and the teeth beneath them.

What affects the cost of veneers

The cost of veneers depends mostly on how many teeth you are treating and the material used. Improving a single chipped tooth is very different from redesigning several teeth across your smile.

  • The number of teeth being veneered.
  • The material chosen, such as porcelain, and the lab work involved.
  • The planning and any trial smile used to design the result.
  • Whether a night guard is recommended to protect the veneers afterward.

Veneers typically cost more per tooth than dental bonding, but porcelain lasts longer and resists staining better, so the choice is about trade-offs rather than one being simply cheaper. Veneers are cosmetic and are usually not covered by insurance or CDCP, and we will tell you that plainly. You always receive an exact written quote after your consultation, before any treatment begins.

Insurance and payment

Because veneers are a cosmetic treatment, most dental plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) do not cover them. We prefer to be clear about that from the start so you can plan your budget with accurate expectations.

Our team is happy to give you a detailed written estimate and talk through your options, including whether a more limited treatment like bonding or whitening would meet your goals at a lower cost. If you want to improve several teeth as part of a broader plan, we can discuss how a smile makeover ties the pieces together.
