Preventive Screening
Oral Cancer Screening in Scarborough
A quick, routine check built into every exam, because early attention matters.
Oral cancer screening is a standard part of every checkup at Cedarbrae Dental Center, not a separate appointment. It takes just a couple of minutes and gives us a chance to notice changes in your mouth, tongue, and neck early.
Open 7 days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Why this screening is part of every visit
Oral cancer can develop in areas that are easy to miss during everyday brushing and flossing, including the back of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and the throat. Because it doesn't always cause pain in its earlier stages, a screening by a trained professional is one of the more reliable ways to notice something worth a closer look.
We build this screening into every routine exam so it happens consistently, without you needing to ask or book something extra. It's a visual and physical check, and if we ever notice something that warrants further attention, we'll refer you promptly to the right specialist rather than trying to diagnose it ourselves.
Between visits, it also helps to know what to watch for yourself. A sore, red patch, or white patch that hasn't healed within two weeks, a lump you can feel in your cheek or under your jaw, numbness in part of your mouth, or a change in how a denture or partial fits are all worth mentioning to us rather than waiting for your next scheduled exam. Most changes like this turn out to be minor, but a quick call costs you nothing and lets us take a focused look sooner. We would always rather see you for a five-minute check that turns out to be nothing than have you wait months on something worth a second look.
What the screening involves
Visual check
We look closely at your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and the roof and floor of your mouth for any patches, sores, or areas of colour change.
Physical exam
We gently feel the tissue in your mouth and the area under your jaw and along your neck, checking for lumps or unusual firmness.
Follow-up on anything unusual
If we notice something that hasn't healed on its own or looks worth a closer look, we'll talk you through it and refer you to the appropriate specialist for further evaluation.

Request AppointmentRisk factors worth knowing
Screening is for everyone, but certain factors are worth mentioning to us:
- Tobacco use of any kind, including smoking and smokeless products
- Regular or heavy alcohol use
- A sore, patch, or ulcer in the mouth that hasn't healed within two weeks
- A family or personal history of cancer
- Prolonged sun exposure affecting the lips
- Age over 40, as risk tends to rise with age
What screening can and can't tell you
Benefits
- Takes only a couple of minutes and is included in every routine checkup
- Gives a trained set of eyes a look at areas you can't easily check yourself
- Creates a baseline so changes over time are easier to notice
Honest limits
- A screening is not a diagnosis; anything unusual is referred out for further testing
- It cannot rule out every possible condition, and new symptoms between visits should still be mentioned to us
