Loose dentures: reline, repair or replacement?
Different problems need different solutions. Learn the terms before agreeing to a new appliance.

The short answer
A reline changes the fitting surface of a denture. A repair addresses damage to the appliance. Replacement means making a new denture. An assessment is needed to work out why the existing one is uncomfortable or loose.

Describe the problem, not just the age
Tell the dental team whether the denture slips, clicks, hurts, has broken or no longer lets you eat comfortably. Your mouth can change over time, and the appliance itself can become worn or damaged. Age alone does not explain which solution is needed.
If possible, explain when the problem began and whether anything changed beforehand. Bring the appliance and any broken pieces. Do not reshape, glue or adjust it yourself; a home repair can complicate the assessment.
Understand what the proposed work will address
Ask the clinician to identify the problem that a reline or repair is intended to solve and what it would not change. For example, ask whether the tooth arrangement, appearance and bite will be reassessed or retained. This helps avoid expecting a fitting-surface adjustment to produce an entirely new design.
Before choosing replacement, ask why the old denture cannot reasonably be adapted. Confirm the time without an appliance, any interim plan, the follow-up included and what to do if discomfort continues after the work.

Common questions
Can extra adhesive solve a changing fit?
Do not use increasing amounts as a substitute for assessment. Ask why the fit has changed and how the appliance should be managed.
Should I just tolerate soreness?
Arrange a review for a painful or poorly fitting appliance. Explain the symptoms so the team can advise you about wearing it before the appointment.
