Temporary vs permanent crowns: what changes?

The short answer
A temporary crown protects a prepared tooth while the final crown is being made. The final crown is the planned longer-term restoration. ‘Permanent’ does not mean it can never need repair or replacement.

What the final fitting involves
In a conventional crown sequence, the temporary is removed and the final crown is checked for fit, shade and how the teeth meet before it is cemented. Some treatments follow a different sequence, so ask what has been planned for you.
This appointment is a good time to mention questions about appearance or how the bite feels. If you are unsure what sensations are expected after a visit, ask for clear written instructions and an explanation of what should prompt a call.
Make a plan for the time between visits
Before leaving with a temporary crown, confirm the next appointment and the instructions for eating and cleaning around it. Ask who to contact if it becomes loose, comes off or your symptoms change. Do not treat an educational page as a substitute for your own aftercare instructions.
