Does a damaged filling always need complete replacement, or can part be repaired?
A localized filling defect may sometimes be repaired while sound material stays in place. Complete replacement removes the existing restoration before rebuilding it. The dentist needs to assess the filling and tooth together, including the defect, decay risk and why the problem developed. Repair can preserve more existing tooth structure when suitable; it is not appropriate for every defect. Ask what a repair would leave unchanged and why a full replacement is or is not needed. A stain, photograph or the filling's age cannot decide that by itself. Surface refinishing or monitoring may also be discussed when appropriate. FDI: repair of restorations.
