If you are anxious about dentistry, “Will I be numb?” and “Will I be asleep?” may sound like versions of the same question. They are not. Numbing medication and sedation address different aspects of an appointment, and some treatment plans use both.
Knowing the distinction can help you explain what worries you. Fear of feeling pain, distress about a sound and difficulty tolerating a long appointment may need different kinds of support. There is no need to decide which medication you need before speaking with the dentist.
What each approach is intended to do
Local anaesthetic reduces pain sensation in a particular area. It does not, by itself, make you unconscious. Sedation changes anxiety or awareness to varying degrees, depending on the approach; general anaesthesia is a separate state involving loss of consciousness. The choice depends on the procedure, health history and individual needs. ADA: anaesthesia and sedation.
| Approach | Main purpose | A question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Communication and pacing | Help make the visit more manageable | Can we agree on breaks and a stop signal? |
| Local anaesthetic | Numb the area being treated | How will you check that the area is ready? |
| Sedation, when suitable | Help manage anxiety and awareness | What will I likely experience, and what are the risks? |
Sedation does not automatically replace local anaesthetic. Dental treatment under sedation may still involve numbing the treatment area. NHS Leeds: dental sedation information.
Discuss availability rather than assuming it
Cedarbrae's sedation-dentistry page is a starting point for a comfort consultation. Ask which approaches are currently offered, who provides them and whether they are appropriate for your planned care. An online discussion of sedation is not confirmation that a particular method is available at your appointment.
Ontario dentists require authorization from the dental regulator for the sedation or general-anaesthesia modalities they administer. RCDSO: sedation authorization. A referral may be needed when a patient's requirements are outside a clinic's scope.
Share your medications, allergies, relevant medical conditions, previous reactions to anaesthesia and use of alcohol or other substances honestly. Do not take someone else's sedative or add medication to prepare yourself for a visit.
Make a plan for before, during and after
Ask for the benefits, material risks and alternatives in language you understand. The treatment and consent discussion should happen before sedation affects your ability to make decisions. RCDSO: consent to treatment.
Before arranging transport or taking time off, obtain the instructions for your specific plan. Confirm eating and drinking instructions, usual medications, whether an accompanying adult is required, and restrictions on driving, working or caring for someone afterward. Requirements differ; do not copy another patient's preparation timetable.
The existing dental-anxiety guide offers a broader discussion of coping and communication. You can ask to start with a conversation rather than assuming that sedation is the only route to care.
Three common questions
Will sedation mean I feel or remember nothing? Not necessarily. Experience and memory vary with the method and the individual. Ask what is realistic; complete absence of sensation or recall should not be promised.
Can I still say I need a pause? Discuss how the team will communicate with you and monitor comfort for the proposed approach before treatment starts.
Can I drive myself home? Do not assume so. Confirm transport and supervision requirements in advance and follow the instructions you receive.
For a routine dental assessment, request an appointment and mention your comfort concerns when booking.
